Type of Animal: mollusk
Species Scientific Name: Architeuthis.
Description: Mollusks have a long, torpedo shaped body, with a beak like mouth that is strong enough to cut through steel cable. Giant squid have five pairs of arms. One pair is thinner and longer than the rest. Just past the mouth are the eyes. The eyes of the giant squid are the largest in the animal kingdom, getting as big as eighteen inches across. (All squid move through the ocean. It weighs over 1,000 pounds (45 kilogams). Some measurements have put it at nearly 60 feet (18 metres).
Habitat: They live in very deep oceans. Ocean squid are thought to be open water deep, cold sea creatures.
Range: They can be found off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Gulf Of Mexico, New Zealand, and Norway to the Azores.
Food: Giant squid eat fish and sperm whales.
Predators/Threats: Sperm whales are enemies of giant squid.
Fabulous Facts: No scientist has ever seen one
alive.
